Quality
At Tilsner Carton Company we recognize that quality and speed of delivery are two of the most important reasons why we are selected as a supplier. We do everything we can to ensure that what we produce meets or exceeds your expectations and industry standards, and we strive to do so within the timeline you specify.
We have a quality specialist on staff who is dedicated to the day-to-day testing and procedure oversight. In addition, we have a multi-disciplinary "Seamless Team" that identifies ways to improve our current processes and procedures to provide a "seamless" experience for you as a customer, and for our employees as a job flows through our facility.
Compliance - Corrugated
The major components of these products are paperboard, water based and soy inks, and adhesives. These components are generally considered to pose no concern.
The corrugated sheets, boxes and displays we supply meet or exceed the legislation requirements established for RoHS, REACH, SVHC, CONEG and European Union directive 2005/95EC heavy metals.* (Specifically Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent, Chromium and Fire Retardants PBB and PBDE.)
We continue to work with our suppliers, monitoring their MSDS requirements and our own testing processes to assure our customers of the safest and highest quality products available.
The amount of recycled material in the corrugated we purchase depends on which vendor we use and varies according to board grade. All linerboard purchased through one vendor's paper mill is 100% recycled. Other vendors recycled content for liners range from 82% to 100%. However, the addition of mediums used in box making may lower the recycled content in the finished product.
The minimum requirement for SFI certification is 66.67%. The average amount of recycled products in our products is typically above 82%.
Compliance - Heat Treated Pallets
Tilsner Carton Company manufactures heat treated pallets for use in overseas shipping. Our pallets meet the criteria under ISPM 15 for treatment and marking of packaging materials. We are a member in good standing with the Forest Products Services WPM program, which is acredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee. All heat treated pallets bear the wood packaging material (WPM) stamp.
The legislation listed above is the following:
-
RoHS— Restriction of Hazardous Substances 2002/95/EC and WEEE – Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive. -2002/95/EC – restricts the use of heavy metals–Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent, Chromium etc.; European Parliament and Council Directive 2002/95/EC, Directive (EC) 2011/65/EU and compliant with (EU) 2015/863 directive for DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP.
-
REACH 54—Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals – 1907/2006/EC, comply with European Directive 76/769/EEC and Directive 94/62/EC and amended by EU 2015/720 as administer by ECHA – European Chemicals Agency for SVHC—Substances of Very High Concern – including all 223 substances listed through January 17, 2023.
-
SVHC-Substances of Very High Concern - 10/8/2008 - include extremely toxic carcinogens.
-
CONEG-Coalition of Northeastern Governors - 1976 - For the purpose of establishing policies for Governors/States focusing on Economical, Environmental and Social well-being issues. In 1992 they formed TPCH-Toxins in Packaging Clearing House, which adopted the RoHS, REACH and SVHC directives.
-
Does Not contain any substance listed pursuant to the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65) in an amount that would require a warning label to Buyer’s employees or others using the product. Tilsner Carton Company complies for substances thru March 19, 2021, and does not require a warning statement.
We receive questions about two other efforts, but they do not apply to the products we produce. They are the following:
-
CPSIA-Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act Applies to children's toys and bedding etcetera, and is not applicable to us, because packaging/displays are intended to be discarded and not for children to play with.
Testing
Our raw material testing includes board grade verification with "basis weight verification" to make sure the board we are using is what was specified.
We also check the board caliper to validate the thickness of the board used. The thickness correlates to board strength and is key to box performance.
Tilsner Carton Company can conduct Edge Crush Resistance testing in-house. It determines the ECT value of corrugated board, which is the amount of force needed to crush board on-edge. It is the primary factor in predicting the compression strength of the completed box. "Stacking strength" or "compression strength" is a corrugated box's resistance to applied external forces. Our pneumatic corrugated sample cutter creates near perfect samples for the most accurate test results.
To meet carrier regulations and federal specifications we can conduct other tests such as:
-
Burst Strength Test/Mullen Test
-
Compression Strength Test
-
COBB Testing
-
Structural Design/Performance Test
-
Puncture Resistance Test
-
Etcetera
We also contract with a third-party testing laboratory for certification of packaging used for hazardous materials. Contact your sales representative for details.
