Pallet Basics, Options and Styles
Basic pallet construction: The length of the pallet is the length of the stringers, which are the boards that run parallel. This number is stated first. The deck boards run horizontal on the stringers/pallet and determine the width. This number is stated second. Example: 48" x 40" 48" is the length and 40" is the width.

Pallet construction options include:
* Lumber grade: Lightweight (softwood of pine, spruce or fir) and heavy duty (hardwood of oak, maple or birch)
* Styles: 2-way, 4-way and block referring to how a forklift or pallet jack can access the pallet. Illustrations below.
* Ascetic: unplugged, plugged and re-fabricated. Unplugged is a new or used pallet which has no added pieces only deck boards and stringers. Plugged is a used pallet that has been plugged and repaired. Re-fabricated is a pallet that has been rebuilt with used material.

2 Way
2-way pallets have entry openings on the front and back only by the stringers beneath the deck boards, for forklifts and pallet jacks. Their strong, simple design handles heavy, stable loads cost-effectively—perfect for directional movement in manufacturing and industrial use.

4 Way
4-way pallets have entry openings on all four sides for forklifts and pallet jacks from any direction below the deck boards. Their versatile design offers flexible handling and durability—perfect for dynamic warehouse and distribution use.

Block
Block pallets provide full four-way entry for easy access below the deck boards by forklifts, hand trucks, and pallet jacks from any direction. Engineered for consistent quality, they handle heavy loads and harsh conditions reliably—ideal for warehouses, distribution, and transit to boost efficiency and safety.
